1977

Service Mission

Owing to the need of persons with intellectual disabilities in the community,  a member of the Kowloon Union Church, Mr. Bernard Ng, who was a physiotherapist, advocated for the establishment of rehabilitation services for people with intellectual disabilities in the church. In October of the year, an extraordinary general meeting of the church approved the establishment of a day care center for persons with intellectual disabilities and immediately formed a preparatory committee.

Kowloon Union Church Wai Ji Training Centre

Kowloon Union Church Wai Ji Training Centre (now known as Wai Ji Christian Service) was established in the church to provide half-day training service for people with intellectual disabilities.

Whole-Day Training Service

(Nam Shan Day Activity Centre)

The training centre received subvention from the Social Welfare Department and subsequently moved to Nam Shan Estate in Shek Kip Mei, and provided Day Training Services. In 2000, the centre merged with the Tai Hang Tung Day Activity Centre to become the current Nam Shan Day Activity Centre.

Gateway Club

In addition to providing Day Training Services, WJCS emphasizes the physical and mental development of persons with intellectual disabilities. The "Gateway Club" was established in Day Training Centre to provide social and recreational activities for persons with intellectual disabilities.

Sheltered Workshop at Long Ping

Hostel at Long Ping

The first Sheltered Workshop and Hostel of WJCS was established at Long Ping Estate in Yuen Long. It aims to help service users develop the skills needed for independent living, and to promote social integration through various life skills training and programmes.

Day Activity Centre and Hostel at Po Lam

The first Day Activity Centre and Hostel of WJCS was established at Po Lam Estate in Tseung Kwan O. By providing various nursing services, it helps maintain service users' motor functions and promote their health.

Bradbury Centre and Hostel at Tin King

The Day Activity Centre and Hostel was established at Tin King Estate in Tuen Mun, allowing service users to participate in various training and activities to develop their interests and talents, build self-confidence, and strengthen social skills.

The Day Activity Centre and Hostel was established at On Ting Estate in Tuen Mun, providing various training and support to enhance service users' self-care abilities.

Supported Employment Service

WJCS started one of the first supported employment service to help intellectually disable people with a higher working ability to find job opportunities in the open job market.

The Agency was formally renamed "Wai Ji Christian Service" and it was incorporated as a limited company.

Occupational Therapy Service

Apart from general training and care, WJCS introduced occupational therapy service to provide professional paramedical support for our service users.

Sheltered Workshop at Hor Ping

Hostel at Hor Ping

The Sheltered Workshop and Hostel was established at Long Ping Estate in Yuen Long, incorporating employment counseling services to enhance service users' employability.

Supported Hostel I & II at Yuet Ping

The Supported Hostel was established at Long Ping Estate in Yuen Long, providing occupational therapy to improve the independent living skills of service users.

Sheltered Workshop at Un Chau

Hostel at Un Chau

The sheltered workshop and hostel was established at Un Chau Estate in Sham Shui Po, providing residential care service and self-care training to enhance service users' independent living skills.

2000

Clinical Psychological Service

WJCS introduced clinical psychology services to provide case assessment, consultation, and therapy for service users with emotional or behavioral challenges,  to improve their quality of life.

Wai Ji Hong Yip Co. Ltd.

WJCS established its first Social Enterprise which aims to care for and support the employment development of persons with intellectual and other disabilities, assisting them in vocational rehabilitation.

House of Arts and Skills

Sheltered Workshop at Long Ping was converted into an Integrated Vocational Rehabilitation Services Centre, named as “House of Arts and Skills”, providing service users with one-stop integrated and seamless vocational rehabilitation services, and to prepare them for potential advancement into open employment.

Physiotherapy Service

To maintain the physical functioning and prevent deterioration of service users, WJCS has introduced a physiotherapy service. This service includes assessment, treatment, and training to enhance their physical abilities and mobility.

Tseung Kwan O Integrated Rehabilitation Services Centre

The first Integrated Rehabilitation Services Center was established at Sheung Tak Estate in Tseung Kwan O, providing Day Activity Centre, Supported Hostel, Hostel for Moderately Mentally Handicapped Persons, Hostels for Severely Mentally Handicapped Persons, Care and Attention Home for Severely Disabled Persons.

Mei Tin Integrated Rehabilitation Services Centre

The centre was established at Mei Tin Estate in Sha Tin, providing Day Activity Centre and Hostels for Severely Mentally Handicapped Persons, Integrated Vocational Rehabilitation Services Centre.

Yuen Long District Support Centre

The “Home-Based Training Team” established in 1988, was converted into “Yuen Long District Support Centre”, located in Long Ping Estate. It provides personal training and diversified support services for persons with intellectual disabilities in the community.

"Healthy Teeth Happy Life"

The first outreach dental service for persons with intellectual disabilities in Hong Kong, titled "Healthy Teeth Happy Life," was initiated by our Agency to assist service users in rebuilding healthy teeth and dental care habits.

“Cheer On” Carers Support Project

The project provides case counseling and therapy groups for the carers and family members of persons with intellectual disabilities, to relieve their stress. In 2019, the “Cheer On” Parent and Relatives Resource Centre was established in Yuen Long to expand service capacity for carers.

Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Community Services Award

The "Let's be Friends Forever Volunteer Service Project III" of Bradbury Centre and Hostel at Tin King was elected in the "Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Community Services Award 2017".

The Day Activity Centre and Hostel was established at Shui Chuen O Estate in Sha Tin to provide training and care, helping service users improve their community living skills.

Support for Ageing Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

“Po Yee Corner”, a dedicated area providing tailor-made day service for elderly with intellectual disabilities, was established in Day Activity Centre and Hostel at Po Lam. It provides a more suitable living environment, activities, training, and care for elderly with intellectual disabilities to slow down the degenerative process, allowing them to enjoy their golden years.

Professional Outreaching Team for Private Residential Care Homes for Persons with Disabilities

The outreach team provides multidisciplinary professional support for private residential care homes for persons with disabilities located in Yuen Long and Tuen Mun. Service include rehabilitation therapy, psychological counseling, social and recreational activities, all designed to improve the quality of life for service users.

375th Company of The Boys' Brigade, Hong Kong

The 375th Company of The Boys' Brigade, Hong Kong, was established at Sheltered Workshop and Hostel at Hor Ping, through Christian education and leadership training programmes, service users can build up a positive attitude and good character traits and use their talent to create an energetic and harmonious society.

Fellowship for Carers

To care for the spiritual needs of carers through faith, and to receive comfort and support in the Christian faith together with other carers.
